Poona Piagapo was formerly a barrio

"NUNANG"

of Pantao-Ragat and Matungao. It became a separate municipality on March 31, 1976 by virtue of Presidential Decree No. 916. The town’s name was derived from the town of Piagapo in Lanao del Sur where a majority of the residents came from.
